In 1995 Cameron Elementary was awarded a $30,000 grant to develop a technology rich program. The West Virginia Legislature has provided funds for multimedia and innovative uses of technology for teacher productivity and student utilization. Sixty-four demonstration sites have been established at schools throughout the state to assist teachers in understanding the benefits of using multimedia materials in the classroom. These sites, which include Cameron Elementary, assist other teachers and schools in understanding how to integrate technology into the curriculum. Cameron Elementary used this grant to purchase and implement Optical Data's Windows on Science and Windows on Math.
Windows on Science is an elementary science program that capitalizes on children's curiosity, combining images and activities in a way that makes science come alive for all students. It is a complete science program that can be used throughout the year, either alone or to supplement an existing program. With the Windows on Science videodiscs, you can use vivid footage of a tornado sweeping across the landscape to introduce a weather lesson…a movie clip of a careening roller coaster to illustrate potential and kinetic energy…or a video close-up of a mother whale with her newborn calf to teach about aquatic mammals.
Windows on Math helps students connect to the real world using innovative video, activities, and literature to make math meaningful by addressing a variety of learning styles. It is a complete, full-year curriculum that allows teachers to select the lessons that will help their students learn best. Windows on Math helps children see that math isn't just a set of rules and symbols, but rather a way of learning about the world. Each lesson supports the standards for teaching math established by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
