Every year children throughout West Virginia are
encouraged to submit a sample of their creative writing for a state-wide
contest called Young Writers. First and second grade students can
submit essays up to 100 words in length. Third and fourth grade students
may write essays up to 300 words and fifth and sixth grade students may
write up to 700 words. These are judged at the school level and winners
advance to the county competition. Winners from each county then
compete for state recognition. Those winners receive a certificate
and attend a Writer's Tea in Charleston, WV, where they meet a famous author.
