Fourth Grade

May 2012
Well, our field trip to the Challenger Center has come and gone.  We had an awesome time!  Thank you to all to those of you who supported us.  Thank you to Target for supplying us with a grant that made this trip possible (and Mrs. Lightner and Mrs. Zambito for applying for the grant).  Thank you to PTK for helping to cover the cost of meals so that we may have a new experience of eating in a college cafeteria.  Also, thank you to The Women’s Club of McMechen, AEP, and Jean Riley (Mrs. Lightner’s mom), for donating money so that we could help offset some of the costs for t-shirts.  Thank you also to the parents for your support in making this trip the best one yet!

And now, on to WesTest!  May 10th is our first day of WesTest, we will be taking the Math portion of the test. Please continue to work with your child with reading and math.  Work on comprehension by having them read a newspaper article and then ask them what they read about; work on math by having them help you cook and measure the ingredients.  While driving somewhere ask them multiplication facts (and division).  This will give your child more confidence as they get ready to take “the test”.

Please make sure your child is here on time during the days of the WesTest.  Please try to have your child here no later than 8:15, this will allow us to not feel rushed. If they eat breakfast at home, please make sure they do so.  We also encourage them to take advantage of our free breakfast program here at school.  An empty stomach makes it hard to think clearly.  The students have put in a lot of hard work this year and we know they want to see it pay off!

December 2011

This year is flying by!  We recently celebrated American Education Week by hosting a Star Watch here at CMES.  It was a HUGE success!  Students went inside the Star Lab to see what the constellations look like.  Many families worked together to create crafts and play games, including several rounds of Space Bingo!  In addition, we enjoyed foods like Milky Ways and Starbursts.  Thank you to all those who came out and supported our school!

We were very pleased with the great turn-out for Grandparents’ Day!  Our musical production featured students performing on different instruments and singing a number of tunes.  Our rooms were crowded with special people in the lives of our students, and for that we are very grateful!        HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

November 2011

The students have been working hard in Fourth Grade!  They have been memorizing their multiplication facts and are now going to apply the basic facts to answer larger problems.  Please continue to work on memorizing the basic multiplication facts.

In Reading, we are going to start a new novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  Students will be given homework to reread chapters that have been read in class.  We are continuing with individualized spelling lessons and are working on the rules of spelling.

A big event that the Fourth Grade hosts is coming up on November 7 at 6:00 pm.  We have been working very hard on our projects and look forward to having them on display for the public and our families to see.  Thank you to all of our supporters  and sponsors!

October 2011
Wow!  What an awesome start to the school year!  In science, we have been learning about and taking care of our African dwarf frogs and fiddler crabs.  Several students have adopted these creatures and will be taking care of them at home!

In social studies, we are learning about being good citizens, what our rights and responsibilities are, the diversity of our nation, and the lifestyle of early pioneers.

Math is moving right along.  We are in Unit 3, focusing on multiplication and division.  Encourage your student to memorize his/her multiplication math facts by using flash cards and/or online games.  We are excited by the progress many students are making!

Using novels for reading is going very well.  Please re-read the chapters at night with your student to help him/her recall what has been read.  HAVE A GREAT FALL!!!

September 2011

Welcome to Fourth Grade!!!!  We have definitely hit the ground running, and want to thank the students for all of their hard work that they have already put forth.  Keep it up!!

In Math we have been working on Geometry and also memorizing our Multiplication Facts.  Parents and guardians, please help us memorize our facts.  Make flashcards, play a game, or simply just ask us our facts, anything to help us remember.

We are doing something different in Reading this year.  Instead of focusing on one story per week and then taking a test on it on Friday, we are reading novels.  This way we can dig deeper into our stories and get to know the characters better.  This will help us enjoy reading and encourage us to read more.  We do have short quizzes between chapters and there still will be a test at the end of the novel.

We are also doing something different in spelling.  We used to focus on 20 words, memorized them, tested on them, and then moved on.  Now we are using everyday words that we misspell in our writing.  Also we are looking at spelling patterns so if we come across words we do not know how to spell, we will be able to decode them from what we have learned about spelling patterns.  There will be smaller lists to memorize, but the students will be working with partner.  The partner and they will end up studying 20 words a week because each will have 10.  Many students will choose smaller words in their writings because they are afraid to misspell them, this way if a word is misspelled, it will simply become one of their spelling words.

Again, thank you for all of your hard work and great attitudes as we get this year started off rolling.  We look forward to many exciting activities and opportunities.
