The “George Drinks Water” robotics team, consisting of Sophie Cunningham, Lilly Bergen and Knox Wilson from John Marshall High School, won the Design Award at the West Virginia High School Robotics State Championship on Monday at Fairmont State University and qualified for the VEX Robotics World Championship in Dallas, Texas.

The Design Award recognizes an organized and professional approach to the Engineering Design Process, project and time management, and team organization. Student demonstration of the Engineering Design Process is fundamental to the educational value of the Robotics Education & Competition (REC) Foundation programs. The Design Award recognizes a team’s ability to document and explain their Engineering Design Process via an engineering notebook and team interview.

“I’m so proud of everything these students have accomplished this season,” said JMHS Robotics coach Cole Simms. “The dedication and drive to spend long hours studying, building, coding and testing their robot is amazing. They are some of the best students I’ve had the pleasure of working with.”

High school teams from around the globe will gather at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas from Tuesday, May 6 through Thursday, May 8, 2025, for the VEX V5 Robotics Competition High School Event. Competitors will celebrate their accomplishments and participate in the 2025 VEX Robotics World Championship.
