Bus drivers from Marshall County Schools competed against other school bus drivers from counties across the Mountain State at Herbert Hoover High School during the 47th annual West Virginia Bus Safety Road-E-O.

The School Bus Safety Road-E-O is an important part of West Virginia Department of Education Policy 4336. State code makes sure county school transportation administrators provide, as part of a school bus operator’s in-service training, some type of skill development exercise in bus handling. Marshall County Schools held its annual School Bus Safety Road-E-O in the John Marshall High School student parking lot at the end of May. County Road-E-O winners earned their ticket to the state championship.

The West Virginia School Bus Safety Road-E-O is a fun, hands-on way bus drivers can practice skills and win prizes. At the state competition, bus drivers showed off their driving skills by maneuvering through a course designed to simulate daily driving challenges such as student loading and unloading, parking and tight turns.

Marshall County Schools bus operators brought home several trophies from the state event. In the Small Bus category, Emily Hickman captured first place followed by Kenny Richmond in second place and third place went to Britta Hill. Chuck McClure walked away with a first-place trophy in the Large Bus division while Wilson Barnes, Jr. earned first place in the Transit Bus classification. For the second year in a row, Marshall County Schools bus drivers also earned the West Virginia Association for Pupil Transportation School Bus Safety Road-E-O Team award.

Barnes, Jr., Hickman and McClure will represent Marshall County Schools, and West Virginia, at the 2024 School Bus Driver International Safety Competition in Austin, Texas this Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, June 30, 2024.

The 50th annual School Bus Driver International Safety Competition will be put on by the National School Transportation Association (NSTA). The organization’s members are recognized as providing the safest, most secure, environmentally-responsible and cost-effective school bus transportation services.
