Sherrard Middle School celebrated its 50th anniversary with a special event bringing together teachers from the original year, former staff, and current faculty and students. The celebration honored the school’s rich history and the many people who have made it such a special place over the years.

Former teacher Mike Ferro and longtime principal Don Yost, who led Sherrard Middle School for 20 years, spoke to students and staff about their time at the school. Both reflected fondly on their experiences and expressed Sherrard was truly one of the best places to work.

Current staff who once attended SMS when it was a junior high were also recognized, including Greg Oliver, current 8th grade math teacher, who shared his years at Sherrard Junior High were “some of the best years of his life.”

Former faculty members attending included Joyce Cole, Carol Young, Lynn Allen, Steve Latacz, Patty Morris, Louella Hanlin, Rosetta Epifano, Denis Morris, Cindy Burke, Richard Niehaus, Mike Ferro, and Don Yost.

During the past 50 years, Sherrard has seen many exciting changes. What was once the home economics room is now a robotics lab, and the former library has been transformed, with half of it now serving as a STEM room—a reflection of Sherrard’s continued commitment to innovation and hands-on learning.
